A story about agak-agak - and a generational love for durian.
Grandma is crazy for it (she'll eat durian with rice for lunch and dinner). Mum loves it too, and Dad always made sure to bring some home during season, because that's just what you do when you love someone.
When the harvest was generous and the kids were only so-so about durian, Mum quietly hoped she could change that. So she turned it into popsicles.
The kids were hooked. But it was always a blind box. Made with true agak-agak spirit, sometimes the popsicle would be perfectly creamy with just the right amount of durian fibre. Other times? Pure icy lolly, as if the milk had simply forgotten to show up. Every popsicle pulled from that freezer hill was a little gamble, and somehow that made it more exciting.
Thirty years later, the recipe has been perfected, and Mum gave it two thumbs up 👍👍. So it's now time to share it with the world.
